Proganochelys quenstedtii is currently the second oldest
known turtle species (after
Odontochelys).
It lived in the
Triassic period
about 215 million years ago -
fossils have
been found in
Germany
and
Thailand.
Proganochelys was about 3 feet (1 meter) long, and in many ways resembled
modern turtles; it had a beak and no teeth, and an armored shell formed
from bony-plates fused to its ribs. Some differences from modern
turtles, include that fact that it had a long tail (which was covered
with spikes and ended in a club), spines protecting its neck,
teeth-like scales ("denticles") on its palate.
