Outwardly, Brontotheres tended to resemble rhinoceroses, but it is believed that they were probably more closely related to horses. Early Brontotheres tend to be relatively small in size, about 3 feet (1 meter) in height, but later species were much larger, upto 8 feet (2.5 meters) in height. Later species also had horn like appendages made from bone, on the front of their snout, and it is believed that males may have used them in butting competitions for mates. Other noteable features of Brontotheres include their toes (they had three toes on their hind feet, Ffour toes on their front feet), and their teeth. Brontothere teeth seem seem to be adapted for cutting vegetation and have a distinctive shape. Brontotheres Timeline:Brontotheres were herbivorous (plant-eating) mammals that lived between 56 and 34 million years ago
