Machairodus was a genus of saber-toothed cats that lived
in Europe,
Asia, Africa, and North America, from the Miocene epoch to the late
Pliocene epoch, between about 13 million and 2 million years ago.
There were many different species of Machairodus, which varied in
size considerably, but the largest species were about the size of
a lion.
Machairodus was equipped with large canine saber-teeth, and these
had serrated edges, it was however not closely related to
Smilodon
(populary known as the "Saber-toothed Tiger" or "Saber-toothed Cat").
