Creodonts are an extinct order of mammalian carnivores. They
first appeared in the late Paleocene epoch, perhaps 60 million
years ago, and finally became extinct during the late Miocene
about 8 million years ago. Their heydey was in the Eocene epoch,
between about 55 and 35 million years ago, and in
the Oligocene epoch, they were the dominant group of predators
in Africa.
Creodonts were once believed to have been ancestral to
Carnivora, but today, the many similarities betwen Creodonts and modern
carnivores are instead considered the result of convergent
evolution.
One of the best known Creodonts was Megistotherium,
which lived during the Miocene epoch and was about 24 million years ago
in Egypt
and Libya. Megistotherium was about enormous,
about 16 to 18 feet (5 to 6 meters) long, and weighed around 1½ tons
- according too many scientists, it was as large, or even larger
than
Andrewsarchus.
