Stegosaur Dinosaurs
The Stegosauria (meaning "roof lizards") dinosaurs
were a infraorder of the the
Ornithischian dinosaurs.
Together
with the
Ankylosaurs,
Stegosaurs form the Thyreophora ("shield bearers") suborder
of Ornithischia.
Dinosaurs in the Stegosauria infraorder include
Stegosaurus
(of course!),
as well as,
among others,
Gigantspinosaurus,
Kentrosaurus, and
Tuojiangosaurus.
Stegosaurs first appeared during the
middle Jurassic period,
and survived until the early
Cretaceous period.
They had all died long before the time that the other remaining
non-avian dinosaurs became
extinct
at the end of the
Cretaceous period.
All Stegosaurs were herbivores (plant-eaters).
They were quadrupedal (walking on four legs), with hoof-like
toes on all four legs, although it is thought that some species
may have been able to rear-up on their hind legs to eater higher-placed
foliage. The front limbs of Stegosaurs were shorter than their hind limbs,
and as a result they are thought to have been slow-moving.

Stegosaurs first appeared during the middle Jurassic, about 176 million years ago, and survived until the early Cretaceous period, about 100 million years ago

"Changdusaurus" is classified as a stegosaurid . The type species was named "Changdusaurus laminoplacodus" by Zhao in 1986, but it has never been formally described, and remains a nomen nudum . Its age makes it one of the oldest species of stegosaurs, living about 160 million years ago. Since it was an herbivore, scientists think that Chialingosaurus probably ate ferns and cycads , which were plentiful during the period when Chialingosaurus was alive. Its name is taken from the Chialing River in southern China. Perhaps growing up to four metres long and weighing just 150 kg, much less than other later stegosaurs.
